My Norwegian Crush

It’s time to admit it; I have a crush on the Norwegian city of Bergen. Ah, there, it feels so good to say it out loud. I can’t place my finger on what it is, but all I know is I couldn’t help smiling the whole time I was here. The beautiful, colorful homes in the hill tops, the crisp, fresh air, and the friendly people make you feel at ease in Bergen as if you are a local.

On the day we landed, the sun was shining and it was a pleasant 75 degrees.  After checking into our hotel for the night, Magic Hotel, we headed out to explore the city. This hotel is located a bit outside the center, but it only takes about 5 minutes on the train to get there. The final stop is Byparken. This is where everything is happening. Boutiques, restaurants,, and galleries line the streets and you are a few minutes away from the famous wharf.

First, we stopped into an awesome thrift store, Fretex.  I purchased a cool denim shirt in the photo below. I also bought a great pair of jeans that I wear all the time. They had so many great items for unbeatable prices. Check them out!

Directly across the train stop is a gorgeous park. The park features a large lake and stunning flowers. After walking around the lake, we ordered beers at a bar with outdoor seating called Michelsen.

We enjoyed our beers and sat for an hour people watching. I spotted this trendy looking group of guys and had to take their pic. They happily obliged 😉

After finishing our happy hour, we headed to Bare Vestland for dinner. This edgy restaurant has INCREDIBLE crusty, warm bread that is served torn in chunks, not sliced. It was served with basil and lemon flavored butter that was out of this world. It was the consistency of whipped cream.  Amazing butter was a theme of this trip as we could taste how fresh and natural it was. It was so good, we ordered it twice. Oops :p Of course, we ordered some lamb as well.

The next morning was dedicated to shopping and wandering around the wharf admiring the scenery and fresh fish market.

I discovered my favorite cafe, Dromedar Kaffebar, serving up delicious lattes. There are two locations in Bergen, and I went to the one located right near the wharf on Torgallmenningen.

The cafe had some interesting artwork on the walls and these, in particular, captured my attention.

What does this piece of artwork say to you? To me, this is showcasing a woman who has so much to share with the world and so much light, but society is hindering her ability to let it shine. I love how art means something different to each viewer.

We spent out last night in a wonderful hotel called the Thon Hotel Bristol Bergen. It is located right in the center of town (and super close to my fave cafe!) but wasn’t noisy. The tiles in the bathroom were heated, making it extra pleasant to step out of the shower.

For dinner, we stumbled upon a chic Italian restaurant, Olivia Zachariasbryggen. We sat outside on plush white sheepskin and they offered us blankets when it became a bit chilly. We each indulged in some wine and ordered pasta dishes. For dessert, we ordered a great cheese plate, because I can never say no to cheese. Everything was fresh and amazing; I can’t imagine anything not being good here.

On our last morning in Bergen, we did some shopping and walked around the wharf again; enjoying our last blissful moments until we had to head to the airport.

I didn’t get to spend nearly enough time in this beautiful country, so I can’t wait for my next visit.

XO,

Sarah
